How to open a bank account in Ireland?

All banks in Ireland are required by legislation to ask customers to provide proof of identity and verify their permanent address when opening a bank account.

Proof of identity

A new customer has to prove personal identity by providing the original of one of the following ID documents:

  • Passport,
  • ID card,
  • Drivers licence.

Proof of permanent address

To verify the permanent address, primary or secondary documents can be used.

Primary documents to verify permanent address are (one of the following):

  • Current utility bill issued within the last 3 months or, if annual bill, for the current year;
  • Current bank, building society or financial institution statement issued within last 3 months;
  • Current balancing statement from Revenue Commissioners;
  • Current Social Insurance documents;
  • Current household/motor insurance certificates;
  • Current mobile telephone bill.

Secondary documents to verify permanent address are (one of the following):

  • Letter from a person in a position of responsibility (e.g. a solicitor, accountant, doctor, minister of religion, teacher, social worker, community scheme supervisor) who is in a position to confirm the person's address;
  • Letter from a respected customer personally known to a member of branch management.
  • Letter from a licensed employment agency that the person has recently arrived in Ireland and is commencing employment or from an employer that a person is not in a position to produce a utility bill or other document that shows an Irish address.

If using a secondary document the new customer is required to submit an additional form (1 page form available from the branch) in order to clarify the reasons for not providing primary documents.

Once you have opened the bank account you can use it for a range of functions: salary payment, debit and credit cards for use in ATMs and retail outlets (for daily use), local payment services (payments for utility, Telco's, insurance, etc services), as well as payments back to Lithuania.

Important note
All National Irish Bank staff are legally obliged to comply with Irish legislation which requires such information to open accounts and avail of the facilities outlined.
Accounts cannot be opened until all the necessary information is provided and satisfactorily meets the requirements.
